Special Event in TJ

Category: Wildomar Club News  |  Permalink

Published: Tuesday, January 19, 2010

On Thursday January 7th this group from the Wildomar Rotary club attend a special event in TJ to give toys they had collected to children in TJ who other wise would not have had any toys this holiday season. Many of the children were from orphanages throughout Northern Baja. For weeks prior to the festivities members of the Wildomar Rotary Club collected truck loads of toys for the event.

Henry Silvestre and Andy Morris arranged for the toys to be delivered to the boarder where a special member of the event met the truck and transfer the gifts across the boarder. On the day of the event the Governor of Baja's bus pick up all the members of the Wildomar Rotary Club at the boarder and transported them to the event.

WOW! What an incredible experience it was. Those who attended will never forget the overwhelming feeling of walking into the stadium where the event was held. Seeing thousands of children seated in the stands, eyes glued to the stage where thousands of toys were awaiting their new owners. Entertainment was provided, singers, dancers and character entertainers charmed the children as they waited for the moment when the toys would be handed out.

As Wildomar Rotarians our hearts swelled with pride when up on the stage, prominently display was the "Wildomar Rotary" banner. Just before the toys were handed out, Wildomar Mayor Bridgette Moore and Wildomar Rotary Club President Karen Hobson were called on stage and given a heart moving thank-you by a special assistant to the First Lady of Mexico.

This is an annual event and all the Wildomar Rotarians who attended pledged that next year they would increase their contributions by double. No child would be left out! Two children amongst thousands stole our hearts. The three year old boy clutching a baseball mitt to his chest with a smile that span the stadium and a little girl with a stuffed white rabbit that was bigger than she was who held her head high as she left the event with her new treasure. We could see the rabbit ears above her head as she moved down the street with the other orphans.

Next year there's room for more of you to share with the club this overwhelming experience! Thank you to all those who shared in this wonderful day in Mexico!

Karen Hobson
Wildomar Rotary Club President
